Description

Quadrant entrance gates to Clifford House, erected c. 1790, comprising square-profile ashlar limestone piers with moulded cornices and flat caps, moulded string courses and mouldes plinths, having flanking curved rubble walls terminating in coursed squared rubble outer square-profile piers. Curved rubble stone wall on opposite side of road mirrors gateway. Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge set within gates, now derelict, and roofless, with pitched roof, rendered walls and square-headed window openings.

Appraisal

This formal entrance to Clifford House is an interesting contrast of formal cut-stone piers and rubble walls and outer piers. The inner piers form the centrepiece of the gateway and exhibit a high level of craftsmanship. The opposing curved wall is an integral part of the entrance.
