Description

Cut limestone entrance gateway to Castle View, built c. 1790, comprising square-profile piers having paired pilasters, string courses and moulded caps with ornate fluted finials, flanking vehicular entrance and pedestrian entrances, having single and double-leaf cast-iron gates with fleur-de-lys-headed railings. Pedestrian entrances have square arches with cut limestone Single-bay single-storey gate lodge to south, now in disuse and roofless, having rubble limestone walls with render string course, square-headed window opening and elliptical-arched door opening to road with brick voussoirs.

Appraisal

These imposing and ornate gates formed the entrance to Castle View, now demolished. The solidly constructed piers form a strong focal point, enhanced by the carved limestone finials. The piers retain their unusual, decorative fleur-de-lys-headed gates, which add further artistic interest to the site. The gates serve as a reminder of the skill of late eighteenth-century local stone masons, sculptors and ironworkers. The gates, together with the gate lodge, provide important context to the locality and form an attractive roadside feature.
