Description

Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, erected c. 1870, having fluted shaft and cap and lion's head motif to spout. Now disused.

Appraisal

Detail of the casting, in particular the lion's head, adds artistic interest to this functional object making a valuable contribution to Main Street. Increasingly rare now, water pumps are a reminder of the importance of communal water sources in the nineteenth century.
