Freestanding uncompleted circular-profile lighthouse, built 1846. Domical roof. Rubble stone walls. Rubble stone boundary wall to site.
During the nineteenth century Capel Island, or Cable Island as it is also known, was considered by many to be a suitable situation for a lighthouse, due to its elevated nature and central position. However, construction was halted on this lighthouse in favour of the lighthouses at Ballycotton to the south-west and Mine Head to the north-east. Today it provides an interesting architectural feature on the coastal landscape.
