Appraisal

This monument is typical of nationalist monuments which looked to the Celtic Revival style for inspiration. It is well-carved and designed and was erected to the memory of local men who died during the Troubles. It occupies a prominent site on the main Cork to Macroom road and forms a local landmark in the area. The inscriptions read 'Site of the Lissarda ambush. To the memory of Co.Om Michael Galvin, 7th Batt cork I Brigade. I.R.A killed in action here against British forces on August 22 1920 and of his deceased comrades. The ambush was one of the first in Cork. In the memory of Patrick O Mahony Kilmurray H.Comp who gave his life in the defence of the republic at Limerick on 17th July 1922.'
