Description

Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1870, now disused. Fluted head and spout, banded shaft and curved cow-tail handle. Set upon concrete plinth and surrounded by concrete walls.

Appraisal

This handsome cast-iron water pump is located in its original position near Castle White House. It served local people as a communal water source, before the provision of domestic running water. The banded shaft, fluted head and spout are finely detailed and demonstrate the careful design of utilitarian cast-iron at the time.
