Former magazine, built 1808, now in use as crematorium. Comprising rectangular-plan complex with rubble stone walls having cut stone copings and rounded corners. Rubble limestone wall to north with cut limestone copings and entrance gate comprising dressed limestone piers with arched entrance comprising dressed limestone pilaster flanking segmental-arched opening with timber battened doors and carved limestone imposts and dressed limestone voussoirs. Dressed limestone architrave, rectangular panel, frieze, cornice and attic storey above. Sunken interior behind walls with five-bay two-storey building having multiple-pitched roofs, concrete walls, camber-headed openings with render surrounds and square-headed openings with render surrounds and timber battened doors.
A fine magazine originally built to hold up to 25,000 barrels of gunpowder for naval base on Haulbowline Island. Haulbowline was an important strategic site for the British naval services throughout the nineteenth century. Well-executed stonework is evident in the walls, particularly in the arched classical style entrance.
