Freestanding cast-iron water pump, installed c.1880. Banded cylindrical shaft, domed fluted cap and banded spout with plain bucket grip and curved cow tail handle. Located at road side within recent rendered enclosing wall.
A fine water pump displaying a high degree of artistic detail for a functional object, including an elegantly curved handle, fluted cap and banded spout. Example such as this are reminder of high design standards which were achievable for functional cast-iron objects. Pumps played an important functional and social role in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, providing a communal water source in the absence of mains supply.
