Freestanding cast-iron water pump, installed c.1890, no longer in use. Banded cylindrical shaft and circular plinth bolted to square-profile cast-iron base plate. Cylindrical fluted faucet to front (north), having cow-tail handle to side (west), missing cap. Located to side of main road on elevated concrete platform, approached by concrete steps and enclosed by concrete walls, having engraved date stone “1948” to east wall.
An attractive cast-iron water pump located in its original position on the side of the main street of Oldchapel which would have once acted as a communal water source to local people. The banding and fluting are well executed and, along with the elegantly curved handle, add artistic interest to this utilitarian object.
