Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, erected c.1890. Fluted shaft, moulded base, acorn finial and fluted cap. Recent steel tap.
Appraisal
This water hydrant exhibits artistic detailing in its design, which serves to enliven this otherwise functional object. Water hydrants such as this played an important social and functional role in nineteenth and twentieth century Ireland, providing an easily accessible communal water source.
