Description

Detached thirteen-bay single- and two-storey railway station, opened 1853, comprising three-bay two-storey central block and five-bay single-storey lateral wing to west. Five-bay single-storey recessed later wing to east with single-bay single-storey projecting end bay to east having glazed lantern to apex. Pitched timber canopy over platform and line to rear elevation to north, supported to north by freestanding section of open arcaded wall. West wing extended to south, c. 1890, comprising four-bay single-storey glazed projecting entrance block with cantilevered canopy over entrance. Pitched and hipped slate roof with lead-ridge rolls, ashlar chimneystacks, mineral felt added to booking hall roof and projecting canopy on timber brackets. Snecked limestone walls with ashlar string courses, moulded bands, raised rusticated quoins and timber cornice, partly coved by later fascia board. Swept-arched openings with raised limestone lugged surrounds, keystones, limestone sills and timber six-over-six pane sliding sash windows. Timber glazed panels to booking office. Retaining interior features. Platform covered by open-truss roof with decorative joint covers. Attached two-bay single-storey outbuilding, built c. 1855, to east retaining original aspect. Wall-mounted cast-iron letter box, c. 1905, with inscribed “ER VII” monogram. Detached three-bay two-storey former station master’s house, built c. 1855, to east with three-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting porch to right ground floor, tripartite window opening over, moulded architraves to openings, single-bay two-storey side elevations and three-bay single-storey flat-roofed return to rear to north with pilasters and modillioned cornice. Detached three-bay single-storey limestone ashlar outbuilding, built c. 1855, to east, possibly originally water tower with moulded cornice and rubble stone-built side elevations, now disused. Freestanding three-bay single-storey over raised base signal box, built c. 1855, to east with single-bay side elevations.
