Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, erected c. 1880, having moulded base with bucket stand, fluted shaft having maker's mark, moulded neck with spout and domed fluted cap having acorn finial. Manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy, Kilmarnock.
This hydrant exhibits attractive, well executed yet restrained detailing which enlivens its utilitarian form. The bucket stand is an interesting feature, which are becoming increasingly rare. It is an important reminder of town life before the widespread provision of piped water supply.
