Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, installed c. 1910, comprising moulded pedistal and fluted shaft. Having banded neck, spout, handle and fluted cap with acorn finial. Now disused. Located on footpath within the village of Mahoonagh.
This item of street furniture is of a kind that was typically installed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They were developed as mains water schemes within smaller urban areas with the hydrant providing a controllable outlet. This hydrant is a fine example of the mass produced cast-iron items of this period, displaying simple artistic details including fluting, an acorn finial and a decorative handle.
