Description

Pole-mounted cast-iron round-headed post box, erected c. 1930, with P&T insignia set in relief. Mounted on a wooden post.

Appraisal

The simple form of this post box is enlivened by the P&T insignia to its base. This insignia is reminiscent of a time when both post and telegram were used widely as a means of communication. Such boxes were produced on mass following Ireland's independence from Britain in the early part of the twentieth century and replace the former VR post boxes. These round-headed post boxes are becoming increasingly rare throughtout Ireland.
