Description

Bee bole structure comprising eighteen bee boles in three tiers, erected c.1820, built of squared blocks of limestone with round brick-arched heads to boles. Cut-stone eaves and with string courses separating rows. Built against interior of north-east section of bawn wall of medieval Ballingarry Castle.

Appraisal

The area enclosed by Ballingarry Castle bawn walls appears to have been used as a walled garden for Ballingarry House across the road to the north, and it is likely that the bee boles were built at the same time as the house. Due to the quality of their construction the bee boles have survived in good condition, but are now threatened by extensive vegetation growth to the bawn walls.
