Appraisal

A country house showing an irregular plan form with multipartite openings, polygonal bay windows, and a multi-gabled roofline. The country house was built for Valentine Maher MP (1780-1844) who originally commissioned Anthony Salvin Senior (1799-1881) before bringing William Tinsley (1804-85) on board 'to take over and alter the older man's plans' (Forbes 1953, 33). Turtulla House was repurposed as a clubhouse in 1944, and largely reconstructed in 1981, but retains much original fabric. Adjacent outbuildings and a walled garden contribute to the setting of the country house.
