Freestanding cast-iron waterpump, c.1880, comprising fluted pedestal with moulded necking having spout, and fluted dome cap with acorn finial. Now disused. Set back from line of road on tarmacadam verge.
An attractive waterpump that, although no longer in use, presents an appealing feature in the street scene. The waterpump is of particular importance as a reminder of the mechanisms installed for the provision of clean drinking water in the period before mains water supply systems. The various raised details enhance the artistic design quality of the piece, and indicate the equal importance of aesthetics as well as functionality.
