Freestanding cast-iron waterpump, c.1890, comprising banded cylindrical shaft with fluted head having fluted spout, ‘cow tail’ curvilinear handle, and fluted ogee-dome cap. Now disused. Set back from line of road on tarmacadam verge.
An attractive waterpump representing an important artefact in early-surviving mass-produced cast-iron ware. The various raised details enhance the artistic design quality of the piece, and attest to the importance placed on aesthetics as well as functionality. The waterpump is of particular importance as a reminder of the mechanisms put in place for the provision of clean drinking water in the period before mains water systems.
