Description

Gateway, c.1820, comprising pair of tooled limestone ashlar piers with cut-stone capping. Renovated, c.1995, with replacement wrought iron double gates added, and random rubble stone flanking boundary walls reconstructed. Set back from line of road at entrance to Gardenmorris House estate.

Appraisal

An attractive composition that forms a pleasant feature terminating the vista from the north leading on to the Ballinlough Crossroads. The construction of the piers is particularly fine, and represents high quality stone masonry. The replacement gates are sympathetic to the simplicity of the original scheme, although the reconstructed flanking boundary wall does not enhance the appearance of the composition.
