Freestanding cast-iron waterpump, c.1875, comprising octagonal shaft with pointed-arch recessed panels to each face having Gothic-style tracery detailing, spout, handle, and moulded capping. Now disused. Set back from line of road on grass verge.
An appealing feature in the streetscape, representing an important, early-surviving artefact of cast-iron ware. The waterpump belongs to a very rare design group, and incorporates delicate Gothic-style embellishments that significantly enhance the artistic value of the piece. The waterpump is of additional importance as a reminder of the facilities put in place for the provision of clean drinking water in the period before mains water systems.
