Freestanding cast-iron waterpump, c.1910, comprising fluted shaft with moulded necking having spout, and originally with fluted ogee-dome capping having acorn finial. Capping now missing. Sited at junction of two roads.
An attractive waterpump, which remains in use, and which represents an important artefact in early-surviving, mass-produced cast-iron ware. The raised details throughout, now diminished as a result of the loss of some fittings, identify the artistic design quality of the composition that elevates the piece beyond the merely functional. The waterpump is of special significance as a reminder of the mechanisms installed for the provision of clean drinking water in the period before mains water systems.
