Three-arch rubble sandstone road bridge (viaduct) over river, built 1860 – 1862. Damaged, 1922, with central arch destroyed. Repaired, 1923. Coursed cut-red sandstone pylon piers having engaged tapered pilasters with moulded stringcourses supporting squat engaged obelisk-style panels (extending through parapets), moulded stringcourse to parapets, cut-stone date stone/plaque, and cut-stone coping. Series of three round arches with rock-faced cut-red sandstone voussoirs, and squared rubble stone soffits having render over. Sited spanning Dalligan River valley with forested banks to valley.
An elegantly-composed road bridge (viaduct) that, together with the Ballyvoyle Railway Viaduct nearby (22903205/WD-32-05), makes a dramatic visual statement in the Dalligan River Valley. Reserved Classical-style detailing throughout, including engaged tapered pilasters, enhances the architectural quality of the composition. The construction of the bridge, particularly to the arches that have retained their original profile, identifies the civil engineering heritage of the site. The bridge is of additional importance in the locality for its associations with the Civil War movement (1919 – 1922), which resulted in the destruction of one of the arches.
