Freestanding limestone monument, erected c.1940, comprising sculpted stone statue representing Fr Tom Burke, on plain cut-stone base, atop rectangular-plan cut-stone pedestal with splayed modillions to coping, and inscribed stone plaque to front. Accessed by cut-stone steps.
This finely sculpted statue, by Seán Kavanagh, represents Fr Tom Burke, a Dominican preacher who went preaching in the USA at the end of the nineteenth century and who was known as the 'Prince of the Preachers'. The sculpture adds variety to the cityscape and is a physical reminder of the area's social and religious history.
