Description

Single-span railway bridge, built 1851, carrying road over Galway to Dublin railway line. Cut limestone abutments with rusticated quoins supporting metal superstructure having wrought-iron latticework parapets.

Appraisal

This bridge is clearly the work of skilled masons and metalworkers. The rock-faced quoins to the piers add textural interest to the simple form of the structure and the visually appealing design is enhanced by the latticework parapets. It was built by the Midland Great Western Railway in 1851, subsequently absorbed by the Great Southern Railway.
