Freestanding limestone cross consisting of stepped rubble stone square-profile base, erected c.1810, with late medieval socket stone with carved animals, and carved lantern cross of c.1475. Carvings consist of crucifixion scene to south side and Madonna and Child to north side. Located in Market Square.
Known as the Market Cross, this monument is remarkable for the carving of a Crucifixion on one face. It is a significant feature as it is one of the last remnants of a fine late medieval Gothic cross of tabernacle or lantern Type, unique in Ireland, and therefore highly significant to the architectural and archaeological heritage of the county.
