Description

Harbour, built c.1860, comprising pair of opposing piers of rubble stone construction piers. North-west pier extended c.1890 in coursed limestone blockwork. Recent concrete repairs evident to stone block copings of both piers. Rubble stone retaining wall with central load bearing buttress to south-west of harbour with square-headed drain. Rubble stone parapets to external elevations of piers and retaining wall. Battered bases to piers with two sets of limestone block steps to south-east end of northern pier with galvanised steel handrail, and to north-west elevation of southern pier. Cylindrical and conical stone mooring posts to both piers with stone paving to northern pier and gravel surface to southern pier.

Appraisal

The location of this harbour beside a road has ensured its continued use by allowing easy access for transportation of goods and people between land and sea. Its present operation has more to do with serving the tourism industry but it also fulfills the requirements of the local comunity. The aesthetic quality of the harbour is enhanced by the contrast between the earlier rubble stone pier to the south-east and the later stone block construction to the north-west pier, and by the presence of stone mooring posts.
