Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1860, now disused. Comprising cylindrical shaft with raised horizontal banding, fluted upper section, fluted domed cap with finial, decoration to spout neck and cow's tail pumping arm. Set back from road and enclosed on three sides by rendered boundary wall with rectangular concrete water trough to front.
Water pumps were important to nineteenth and twentieth-century social life as they provided a communal water source to local communities. This pump is located in a prominent position adjacent to a Marian shrine and at the corner of a crossroads. The detailing adds artistic interest to this once functional object and though now disused, it provides a visually attractive feature in the landscape.
