Walled garden, laid out c.1830, in use as animal enclosure. Comprising coursed random rubble limestone walls with rubble coping and cut limestone to openings. Remains of garden room to south-east corner with square-headed opening and fireplace, evidence of plasterwork to interior walls. Segmental-arched vehicular opening to east with cut-stone voussoirs to east. Square-headed opening to south with steel lintel. Set on Daly’s Grove Estate with two-storey outbuildings to east.
This former walled garden and its ruined garden room are a reminder of the horticultural tradition once associated with country houses. Originally designed to provide vegetables, fruit and flowers for the house, the shelter provided by the walls would have sheltered the garden from wind and frost and raised the garden temperature by several degrees. The walled garden, along with the adjacent outbuildings, forms an attractive group within the demesne of Daly’s Grove.
