Estae entrance gateway to Castlegar, erected c.1810. Comprising decorative double-leaf cast-iron vehicular gates flanked by square-plan cut channelled limestone piers with plinths, fluted collars, moulded cornices and caps and flanked by cast-iron pedestrian gate to one side with matching outer pier. Curved rendered walls to road with limestone plinth and coping and terminated by more simply detailed coursed limestone piers with caps. Wrought-iron railings bound grass margin to each side of front of gateway. Gateway set opposite gate lodge.
Sited at the entrance to Castlegar Estate, these finely executed limestone piers create a grand and imposing entrance. The evidence of skilled craftsmen can be seen in the finely tooled piers and decorative gates and the combination of limestone and decorative metalwork lends an architectural quality to the entrance and announces the social standing and importance the estate has in local area.
