Detached six-bay single-storey schoolhouse, dated 1887, having lean-to porch to south with replacement slate roof. Pitched natural slate roof with red brick chimneystacks to gables. Half-round cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered walls with rendered skirting band to base. Square-headed six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows with render reveals and tooled limestone sills. Timber battened entrance door in east side of porch. Limestone plaque in east elevation reads 'Scoil Éanna Naomhtha Scoil Náisiúnta' and second reads 'Gorteen National School 1887'. Small garden to front with rendered limestone boundary wall having stone chamfered coping.
The schoolhouse was opened in 1887 with money gifted from a local family, who resided in nearby Temple House. It is the sister school of Saint Monica’s national school in Shanballard. It catered for the boys and girls of the local area and though modernised in the 1950s, the simple form and detailing have been retained and make this modest building an attractive addition to the architectural heritage of the area.
