Appraisal

This gateway, built as an integral component of Castle Ellen house, is a fine and attractive composition. The piers of cut stone and carved lion terminals are a notable example of the high quality of stone masonry practiced in the locality. The cast-iron gates and railing are attractive features. The gateway is an attractive landmark, and serves to convey to the passer-by the grandeur of the house contained within the grounds.
