Entrance gateway to Castle Ellen, erected c.1840, comprising spear-headed cast-iron gates supported on ornamental cast-iron gate posts, with matching spear-headed cast-iron railings on cut-stone plinth walls with cut-stone copings, flanked by cut limestone quadrant walls with tooled limestone copings, and having cut-stone columns with carved lion terminals. Cut-stone jostle stones in advance of gates proper.
This gateway, built as an integral component of Castle Ellen house, is a fine and attractive composition. The piers of cut stone and carved lion terminals are a notable example of the high quality of stone masonry practiced in the locality. The cast-iron gates and railing are attractive features. The gateway is an attractive landmark, and serves to convey to the passer-by the grandeur of the house contained within the grounds.
