Description

Freestanding limestone Celtic cross memorial, erected 1938. Comprising carved limestone Celtic cross with crucifixion to front, and standing on carved plinth with inscribed plaque in form of scroll. Other sides of plinth decorated in style of mock boulders. Set within enclosure having railings to front between monolithic square-profile chamfered cut limestone piers with pointed caps. Located north of Aughrim village.

Appraisal

This elegant monument makes a notable landmark in the area. It marks the spot where Patrick Hogan TD was killed in a car accident in 1936. He served as Minister for Land and Agriculture in W.T. Cosgrave's cabinet from 1922 to 1932.
