Description

Level crossing gates, erected 1851, comprising pair of circular-profile cut and carved limestone piers to each side of crossing, having fluted domed caps, those to north being of replacement render, and also having plinths and cornices. Decorative cast-iron double-leaf vehicular gates, with matching pedestrian cast-iron gate to west side of each, and with snecked limestone flanking walls with curved copings.

Appraisal

This level crossing gateway, built as an integral component of the Dublin to Galway railway line, is an attractive example of a simply executed cast-iron design. The piers of cut limestone are a notable example of the high quality of stone masonry associated with railway infrastructure in the nineteenth century.
