Description

Freestanding limestone cenotaph erected to memory of Edmund Dirrane who died 1827. Comprises rubble plinth having remains of render to side faces, and with dressed stone cornice having rubble stone above topped by roughly dressed equal-armed cross with rounded terminals. Front face of roughly dressed limestone with recessed inscribed limestone plaques and having step below lower plaque. Quarter arc of sun's rays to top corners of plaque.

Appraisal

This cenotaph is one of a remarkable series of distinctive memorials on Árainn, erected to the memory of local individuals who died in the nineteenth century. The combination of rubble limestone walling and inscribed plaques provides an interesting textural contrast.
