Cast-iron wall-mounted post box, erected c.1890, bearing royal insignia of Queen Victoria and crown. Set in rendered pier with curved cap, outside former school.
Cast-iron post boxes with this insignia date from the Victorian period in Ireland. Following Independence, they were repainted but otherwise generally unaltered. The modest form of this box is enhanced by the simple and well designed lettering and the crown, which add artistic interest, illustrate the skill and care of nineteenth-century industrial design and also serve as a reminder of Ireland's former colonial status.
