Freestanding limekiln, erected c.1860, comprising square-plan structure with vertical faces of coursed rubble limestone. Limestone retaining arch to seaward side having rubble voussoirs with wrought-iron lintel below and raking-out hole framed by iron and brickwork. Kiln set into slope to facilitate loading of crushed limestone.
This is a rare survival of a lime kiln on the Aran Islands. Its location beside Killeany Harbour would have enabled bagged lime to be transported to other parts of Árainn an the other islands. It is raltively intact and forms a distinctive group with the harbour and the medieval Arkin Castle.
