Freestanding cast-iron crane, erected c.1850, on south side of Connacht Harbour by Shannon Commissioners, for loading and unloading goods. On cast-iron pivot set in dressed limestone pad, with cogged wheel and cranking handles. Plaque 'Board of Public Works / To lift 1 Ton / 1-8-03 / Shannon Navigation' to main upright support.
While of modest scale the crane is of industrial and technical significance. It attests to Portumna’s importance as a goods depot in the nineteenth century. It is part of a significant group of industrial structures including the harbour, warehouses and adjacent bridge.
