Cast-iron post box, erected c.1900. Set into elevation of folly to boundary wall of Jamestown House. Bears lettering 'Post Office' in relief and also manufacturer's name 'W.T. Allen & Co. London'.
This cast-iron post box is an important feature of the social and urban fabric of the town. Although it does not bear any insignia, its modest form is enhanced by the simple and well-designed lettering, which bears the name of the manufacturer. The recognisable form and simple detailing of this post box are representative of mass production. Post boxes of this material are becoming increasingly rare in Ireland as they are often replaced with modern types.
