Pair of semi-detached three-bay two-storey flat-roofed lighthouse keepers' houses, designed 1863; occupied 1901. Reroofed. Vacated, 1988. Now disused. Replacement flat bitumen felt roof on timber construction with chimney stacks centred on chimney stack having stringcourses below stepped capping, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Rendered walls on cut-granite chamfered plinth. Square-headed central door openings approached by two steps with concealed dressings framing timber boarded doors having overlights. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing two-over-two timber sash windows. Set in shared grounds on outcrop.

Appraisal

A pair of lighthouse keepers' houses erected to a design endorsed (1863) by Captain E.F. Roberts, Marine Inspector for the Ballast Board (CIL), representing an integral component of the mid nineteenth-century built heritage of Contae Mhaigh Eo [north County Mayo] with the architectural value of each unit confirmed by such attributes as the compact rectilinear plan form centred on featureless doorcases; and the uniform or near-uniform proportions of the openings on each floor.
