Appraisal

A house representing an integral component of the domestic built heritage of Doogort with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the elongated rectilinear plan form; the somewhat disproportionate bias of solid to void in the massing compounded by the diminishing in scale of the widely spaced openings on each floor producing a graduated visual impression; and the high pitched roof. NOTE: The house first appears on the Primary Valuation of Ireland (1855) but, repurposed as Mountaiview Hotel, was extended in phases at the turn of the twentieth century: one extension absorbed a thatched house photographed by Robert French (1841-1917) of William Lawrence [NLI L_CAB_04139]. Mountainview Hotel was still trading in 1942 when it was recorded as a ten-bedroom one-bathroom hotel by the Irish Tourist Association.
