Wall-mounted painted cast-iron drinking fountain, installed c. 1910, no longer functioning and in use as flower box. Half-hemispherical bowl with leaf motif rim, round-headed back-panel with embossed inscription 'KEEP THE PAVEMENT DRY', embellishment depicting two swallows in flight, outward projecting curved bracket at head. Operating mechanism missing. Mounted in west side of uncoursed limestone wall on platform of railway station.
This drinking fountain is an attractive example of cast-iron street furniture. The inscription is unusual and the swallow details and other embellishments display skilled craftsmanship. It is one of those little details that make a place special and, as such, makes a considerable contribution to both the railway station and the town.
