Description

Detached single-bay single-storey stone mausoleum, built c. 1823. Rectangular plan. Pitched limestone roof. Rubble limestone walls. Square-headed entrance opening on north gable containing carved plaque with inscription 'erected by James Macdonagh Merchant of Sligo after the death of his son on 31st December 1822', small rectangular openings to either side of doorway. Small square-headed opening to rear. Set within graveyard with church ruins and various cut-stone grave markers including some carved Celtic crosses, rubble stone boundary wall to roadside with segmental stone coping, roughly-dressed stone gate piers with plain stone caps, wrought-iron gate.

Appraisal

This mausoleum set in an overgrown cemetery, with church ruins, is of social and historical interest. The stone roof is reminiscent of the type used in medieval oratories.
