Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, c.1910, comprising fluted shaft and former spout to front, moulded necking with recent tap, and fluted domed cap with acorn finial. No longer in use. Set on concrete plinth on pavement.
This water hydrant is of social heritage interest, dating from a time before domestic water supply, when clean drinking water was provided at a communal source only. This example on the junction of Main Street and Thomas street is one of two in the town, its counterpart located on Adelaide Street. The water hydrant is an excellent example of the high quality design of mass produced cast-iron work in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
