Description

Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, c.1910. Fluted shaft with ogee base. Capital comprising fluted dome with acorn finial and moulded necking with integral spout. Decorative bucket-stand fitted to bottom of shaft. Recent tap to side of cap. Imprint to shaft reading 'SHANNON FOUNDRY LIMERICK'. Set back from streetline on round-profile iron plinth.

Appraisal

A water hydrant of social and technical interest dating from a period, before domestic mains water supply, when clean drinking water was provided at a communal source. It is an excellent example of the high quality design and casting of mass produced iron in the past.
