Description

Detached two-storey two-bay former house, built c.1800, with attached single-storey two-bay outbuilding of same date. Now disused. Pitched replacement corrugated-iron roof, cement barges to gables, cast-iron rainwater goods to front elevation. Squared and coursed rubble red and yellow sandstone walls. Square-headed window and door openings to front rear and end having flat-arched stone heads with cut voussoirs and stone sills. Timber sheeted door with former side lights blocked up with roughly dressed stone. Two former doors to front of outbuilding and wide window opening to west gable also blocked up with stone. Three timber sheeted doors to rear. Set back from road with recent boundary wall to front.

Appraisal

An eyecatching stone building with fine stone voussoirs to the openings that makes a strong contribution to the village's historic character. The quality of the construction suggests the house was associated with an estate or some commercial or instutional use. The blocked side lights flanking the front door indicate that the architectural presentation was quite different when first built, and suggest that is was originally built as a dwelling. Several openings filled with stone show that its use was changed at a relatively early date.
