Description

Single-arch stone road bridge, built c.1790, with subsidiary round-headed arches under ramped approaches. Humped deck with tarmacadam finish. Parapet of roughly coursed and squared stone with central cut-stone pedestal facing deck on each side with inscription reading ‘County Cavan County Monaghan’ within raised frame. Raised coping over pedestal, rendered end piers with recent cappings, cut-stone V-coping elsewhere. Blank framed panels on upriver and downriver elevations of parapet supported on corbel table, with string course below parapet. Ashlar spandrels below string course with ashlar pilasters at either end supporting end piers of parapet. Ashlar voussoirs blocks to main segmental arch, rubble-coursed soffit. Roughly coursed wing parapets with V-coping stones, gently sweeping curves terminate at circular-profile piers with large boss caps and annulus. Roughly-dressed voussoirs to secondary arches under approach ramps.

Appraisal

A very finely detailed bridge, with high quality ashlar limestone arch ring voussoirs and middle arch spandrels contrasting with the parapet and rusticated appearance of the approaches. The gentle sweep of the winged approaches gives a sophisticated senese to the composition. Located on the approach road to Cootehill, with the Bellamont demesne to one side, this bridge spans the Cavan-Monaghan border.
