Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1880. Circular banded shaft, wider fluted head with gadrooned domed cap and spike pinnacle. Spout with raised rim and projecting bucket lip, cow tailed handle pivoted on lug projecting from one side of head. Secured on concrete slab at roadside location.
A water pump displaying artistic detail in a functional design, with elegantly curved handle, fluted cap, and banded spout. It illustrates the high standards of industrial design in cast-iron, prevalent in nineteenth century. Pumps played both an important functional and social role in nineteenth and twentieth centuries, providing a communal water source in the absence of mains supply.
