Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1880. Circular banded shaft, wider fluted head with gadrooned domed cap and spike pinnacle. Spout with raised rim and projecting bucket lip, cow tailed handle pivoted on lug projecting from one side of head. Secured on concrete slab surrounded by iron railings.
This brightly painted water pump is an important part of the social history in Canningstown, being a physical record of a time when public water supply was provided at a communal source, which formed a social meeting place in former times. It is simple but elegant in design and is a fine example of the high quality of mass produced cast-iron work in the nineteenth century.
