Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, c.1890, having fluted shaft, cap with acorn finial, and bucket stand. Foundry name to shaft, now over painted. New tap fitted and still in use. Set on footpath.
A fine example of cast-iron street furniture, with its functional form embellished by carefully considered detail. The hydrant is a reminder of a time before the provision of domestic mains supply when public water was provided at a communal source. It is an excellent example of the high quality of mass produced cast-iron in the nineteenth century.
