Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, c.1910, comprising fluted pedestal with moulded necking having spout, and fluted domed cap with acorn finial and moulded base, now disused. Manufacturer’s imprint reads ‘Glenfield and Kennedy Ld Kilmarnock’. Sited at the side of the road on a square concrete base.
Although no longer in use, this hydrant represents an important surviving item of decorative street furniture on the outskirts of Bailieborough. It stands as a reminder of earlier public services for the provision of clean drinking water in the period before mains water systems. The manufacturers Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd were a Scottish valve and hydraulic engineering company established in 1899, manufacturing pumps amongst other items until 1983.
